YAG Capsulotomy: Restoring Clarity After Cataract Surgery

What is YAG Laser Capsulotomy? A YAG laser capsulotomy, also known as a posterior capsulotomy, is a non-invasive laser eye surgery. It is commonly performed to address cloudy vision that occurs after cataract surgery. When you undergo cataract surgery, your cloudy natural lens is replaced with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL). However, over time, the back portion of the lens capsule (posterior capsule) can become cloudy, affecting vision.

How Does YAG Capsulotomy Work?

  1. Procedure: The YAG capsulotomy procedure takes less than 20 minutes and is typically done in your ophthalmologist’s office or an outpatient surgical center.
  2. Numbing Drops: You’ll receive numbing eye drops to ensure comfort during the procedure.
  3. Dilation: Dilating eye drops may be used to enlarge your pupil.
  4. Laser Treatment: Using a YAG laser beam, your ophthalmologist creates a small opening in the cloudy posterior capsule. This opening allows light to pass through and reach your retina, restoring clear vision.
  5. Recovery: After the surgery, you’ll wait briefly for an eye pressure check. There’s no pain, bandages, or stitches. Most people experience clear vision within 24 hours.

Safety and Complications:

  • YAG capsulotomy is generally safe, but complications are possible. If you notice blurry vision or worsening eyesight, contact your eye doctor promptly.
  • Rare complications may include a torn retina, infection, or bleeding in the back of the eye.
